This week Lisa Bongean bring us a lovely pieced star. But before we get to it, let's talk holidays and stress. Every year I think, next Christmas I'll have time, rather make time to do all the fun things I wanted to do last year but didn't get to do. While I am trying this year, there is simply not enough time in the day...I'm sure you all agree. With grandkids involved, it truly is a magical time of the year. decorating is done, shopping started, baking barely started, sewing deadlines, um working daily on them. My holiday wish for you...time. Time to enjoy the beauty and sweetness of life around you. Tis the season and Tis the season of giving.....stay tuned.
Seven weeks to go....Have you enjoyed this journey? If you are a blockhead, leave me a comment about your favorite part of this journey. Don't look, but there is a prize at the bottom of the page, but only if you comment and leave an email address. If you are not a blockhead, let me know a favorite part of the season. Can you guess my favorite part of the holiday season? Try....
Question of the Week...Christmas presents...did you make any? Did you finish or will you still be stitching on December 24? I did not make a single gift this year, but if I had, I guarantee I would still be stitching on Christmas Eve!!!
Thanks Lisa for this week's block, Pinwheel Star
for Lisa's blog and the pattern
Pinwheel Star
My version includes fabric from Hope's Journey, Rachel Remembered, and center indigo print from Evelyn's Homestead....I'm trying to sneak in a few print here at the end. Evelyn will ship in March. The way time flies around here, that is like , tomorrow! Fun block to piece.
And the 3" Mini Penny block...don't be fooled, the block is not set like a traditional hour glass block. Miss frugal here, saved all the triangles leftover from trimming the triangles away (narrow seam) when making the star point (flying geese units). My fabrics were starched.
If you make your units as directed, you will have 8 light and 8 dark triangles leftover. Use a scant seam to sew 4 units like an HST(close to an 1/8") pressing to the dark triangle.
Trim the 4 HSTs to 2" square.
Press each unit to the dark.
Assemble a pinwheel unit. Press units to the light.
On the back the seams should spin all in the same direction.
Now sew 4 light triangles to 4 dark triangles along the short side. Press these units to the light triangle. Matching the corner units to the sides of the pinwheel, pin so that the light seams nest, then stitch. Press to corner. Repeat on all corners.
Block should be trimmed to 3 1/2" for a 3" finished block
If you need to cut from scratch, cut 2 squares of dark and 2 squares of light 3" each and make 4 quarter square units. Trim each of those units to 2" square. Sew the 4 units together to make the block.
Hope you enjoy making this week's blocks.
And now, here is the generous giveaway from Moda....

ReplyDeleteMy favorite part of the Christmas season is relaxing after Christmas dinner with my family all around...when all's right with the world.
ReplyDeleteAll finished, wrapped and mailed. Actually they arrived.
ReplyDeleteNo handmade gifts this year. Have really enjoyed picking out the fabrics for my Blockhead blocks each week. Can’t wait to see them put together.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite part of our Moda bow has been learning so many little tricks that help my quilting.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite part is time with family.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite part of the Christmas season is putting up the tree and getting out all the decorations. Reminds me of when my kids were young😊
ReplyDeleteFirst Merry Christmas. I believe you just want more time! And your favorite thing is being able to spend time with your family. I have so enjoyed this bow and especially the minis so fun to use little left over scraps that most just toss. Thanks for offering all of us a chance for some of your beautiful fabrics.
ReplyDeleteIs your favorite part all the beautiful lights? That is my favorite part. I did not make gifts for my family this year.
ReplyDeleteI've LOVED being a Block Head. I've been using scraps from previous quilts, and been very disciplined as to not wasting any piece of fabric. I have 2 sets going and plan on another set.
ReplyDeleteI think one important thing I loved about this blockhead journey was how much I learned. I got so much better at piecing and appliquéing! I also am so impressed with the generosity of you and the other designers...thank you!
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas
ReplyDeleteI love Christmas music!
ReplyDeleteI have loved all your mini blockheads. I still have quite a few blocks to finish but did actually make some gifts and got them in the mail two days ago. Hopefully still time for me to finish a Christmas quilt for myself.
ReplyDeleteCOOKIES! My most favorite part of the Christmas season is the cookie baking (and of course the cookie eating). Our grandchildren are now old enough to help and that makes the baking a shared joy.
ReplyDeleteMy fav is the food... and I bet yours is the people. pbxmimi@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteI'm betting your favorite part of Christmas is the grandkiddies. Their excitement and tearing off the wrap is a treasure to behold. I hope Santa remembers me with a gift.

ReplyDeleteTrying to make doll clothes for my granddaughter. Merry Christmas. dorthac at aol.com
ReplyDeleteMy favorite time of the season is Christmas Eve service, and my second favorite is right after dessert is over on Christmas Day. Dishes are in the dishwasher, kids playing with grandparents or their presents if the grandparents have fallen asleep in their chairs while watching a game on tv. And a sense of gratitude falls on the house. That we have food, a warm house, and love ones in our lives not just at Christmas, but everyday. So many who don't have even one of those things! Happy holidays!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite part is sitting in the dark watching the lights on the Christmas tree and slowing down... I'll bet that is your favorite part too!

ReplyDeleteWow. What a nice surprise. Thanks so much for sharing. I love all of the special baking. have a wonderful Christmas
ReplyDeleteMy favorite part of the Christmas season is first, attending Christmas Eve Church service, and then, driving around the town to look at the Christmas lights. My next (or maybe tied for most favorite) favorite is watching my grandkiddos looking with anticipation at all the gifts under the tree, wondering which ones are for them. Thank you for the chance to win your fabulous give-away! Merry Christmas! HUGS... and stitches
ReplyDeleteMy favorite part of the holiday is spending the day with my children and grand babies. Happy Holidays to you and your family!
ReplyDeleteI've loved to see my improvement in working with tiny (sometimes really tiny!) pieces. And I've loved learning a little bit about each of the designers. You are all so creative and helpful.

Peace and Blessings to you and your loved ones in the coming New Year!!!
ReplyDeleteI have just loved working on your tiny 3" blocks and am excited to start putting them together. My favorite part of our holiday tradition is filling the stockings. Now that my children are grown we all find silly surprises to tuck into everyone's stocking and spend the morning drinking mimosa's and laughing while we open them. I suspect that spending time with family is your favorite part, as it is for me!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite part of the season is memories of Christmas with family. And cookies, lights, ornaments, giving gifts, ... I think your favorite part is family time.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite part of the holidays is family....the excitement of seeing all the grandchildren together at one time, the large variety of food, and all the siblings togehter at once.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing is the food that I only cook during Christmas
ReplyDeleteFavorite "part" of Christmas? That would have to be the anticipation of Christmas Eve and Midnight Mass with family but the BEST part is sitting in the church and listening to the beautiful carols sung by the choir ... time to pause and reflect the REAL "Reason for the Season". Merry Christmas to you and yours; all the Blessings of the coming New Year to you and your loved ones. Linda

ReplyDeleteI have enjoyed creating all these small blocks. Every week I look forward to seeing the new one. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity. Merry Christmas!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! Can't wait to get Evelyn's Homestead! Love this week's question. I love making Christmas gifts, but I usually wait until the last minute. I made 6 last night for a meeting tomorrow!

ReplyDeleteI love when the family is home, we have snacks and play games while listening to Christmas music.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite party of the season is to watch the anticipation keep building in the eyes of small children--love that! Perhaps your favorite part is spending time with your family.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite part is playing with the grandies, I bet it’s your favorite part too

ReplyDeleteI'm a blockhead and the best part of this journey for me is seeing everyone's interpretation of the same block (not just the designers, but those in the Facebook group as well). Isn't it wonderful that our hobby allows everyone to be creative in their happy place!
ReplyDeleteDecorating the tree is my favorite part of the season. And I'll guess that it's the same for you as well. Thanks for a chance to win. Casands1@comcast.net
ReplyDeleteDecorating the tree is my favorite part of the season. And I'll guess that it's the same for you as well. Thanks for a chance to win. Casands1@comcast.net
ReplyDeleteI did make a few of our Christmas gifts and since we have already had our family Christmas I am all done with the sewing projects. Thanks for the generous giveaway.
ReplyDeleteI made little bags for all my friends. The fabrics matched each individual's personality or occupation.
ReplyDeleteMy two daughters are grown, but my favorite thing to do at Christmas is to bake their individual favorite cookies and bring them when I visit them, isn't that your favorite thing to do, bake cookies?

I’m gonna guess that’s your Christmas wish too! Thanks for the chance! Your Treasury of Quilts has been calling my name since it came out! Merry Christmas to you and yours!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite part of Christmas is the "spirit" of Christmas...malls are decorated, people are shopping for special things, the bakery is lovely, fancy candy is boxed beautifully, people gather together, even the pet store says "It's Christmas". And I watch all the Christmas classics in December which is a fun tradition and play my absolute favorite Christmas DVD's...Johnny Matthis, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole and Andy Williams all month (and drive my husband crazy!). Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite part of Christmas is getting together with my brothers and their families as we are all not together very often. You can feel the love. Thanks for a chance to win.

ReplyDeleteLove the decorations, the gatherings, the family and the Lord being ever present.
ReplyDeleteSome homemade. I never seem to finish all I want. Perhaps I can learn a new trick- accurately gauging how long a projectile will take.

I would like to have a new camper so me and my family can do things together next year.
ReplyDeleteGoing to Christmas Eve Church service with my children and grandchildren.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite part of the holiday season is different now than it was when I was small. Strangely, as a child my favorite part was grocery shopping with my mom a few days before Christmas to get all the supplies for the HUGE Christmas Day feast she prepared so lovingly. It was the only supermarket trip in the whole year that she made a shopping list. We went to two different stores - one that specialized in the best and freshest vegetables and one for everything else. I guess it's my favorite because of the love and care she put into feeding our family all our favorite and traditional dishes. Nurturing was how she loved us all year 'round, but at Christmas time she ramped it up to the pro-level! I would not expect to see "grocery shopping" on anyone else's list of favorites.
ReplyDeleteI make something for the kids every year. They are done. Thinking of next Christmas' project. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite part of this journey is seeing everyone's completed blocks. It is amazing how color and print placement can totally change the look of the same block.
ReplyDeleteChristmas music - from Messiah to Amahl and the Night Visitors to Corelli to James Taylor to Bing Crosby!
ReplyDeleteBeing with family would have to be my favorite thing about Christmas. I feel for people who have no one to be with at this time of year. I love all your work. To win this giveaway would be wonderful.
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping to make some more homemade gifts next year because I'll be retired then. Merry Christmas to you and your family!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite part of the season is the awe of the little kids, who are so excited by fun and activities of the holiday!

My favourite is decorating the Christmas tree. So m any memories go with each and every ornament. I once read a book called "Live, Love, and What I Wore" about how clothing sparked the writer's memories. For me those ornaments take the place of her clothing.

I am a Blockhead and I've loved learning about all of the designers...from how they assemble the blocks to the fabrics they choose to learning about your personal lives a bit!! I'd guess that your favourite part of the holidays is getting together and spending time with your family, especially the grand babies! The house decorations also bring back memories and have been collected over the years. Each and every one is precious to me. Nancy A: rangerer@sbcglobal.net
ReplyDeleteMy favorite part of the season are all the get togethers, great food and decorating. I don't do as much as I used to but I still find pleasure in what I do. It looks like you have a lot of fun with the decorating too!
ReplyDeleteI love making homemade gifts. This year I did several including quilted items, embroidered items, and soaps and scrubs. I love Christmas so I usually start I September.
ReplyDeleteNancy A, I was going to enter the same thought. We too have collected ornaments from our trips and I adore getting them out, one by one, and recalling memories of the trip.
