Spin Cycle Block 7 Moda BlockHeads 2 by Stacy Iest Hsu and more

Hello Wednesday! Hello Moda BlockHeads and friends!
Today is Stacy's first block, Spin Cycle.  A cute 6" block that is fast and easy.  LOL after last week, we all needed an easy block!
I hope you all found my tips and photos helpful.

For Stacy's pattern for Spin Cycle, CLICK HERE and it will take you to her website.

Thanks Stacy, this was fast and fun!

My fabrics for this week: indigo is from Evelyn's Homestead and pink and red are from the future Harriet's Handwork, that will be in shops in October.

Here is a hint of what goes on when you aren't looking....
I attended a 19th Century Patchwork Diva and friends retreat. So much fun by the way, to get away and have some quality sewing time with friends.
This photo reminded me that I had not shown you my latest venture...Thimbles
This is my friend Julia.  She is super fast and precut her 3" Thimbles from my acrylic template with Paper Pieces before leaving for retreat. I think she calculated she needed 400 something at least to make a nice size throw.  I'd show you the 3" template, but I sold out at retreat.  She made more rows after I took the photo and will rearrange the rows at home.  I can't wait to see her entire quilt!!!

Here is the 3" sample and packet of papers

Yes, I have a complete series of Betsy's Thimbles.
1", 1 1/2", 2", 3", and 4"

The entire venture started with an antique doll quilt I own.
To teach it in a class, I wanted to sew thimbles (tumblers) that were already on the market...couldn't! Not the same shape at all.
So I drew the shape and sent it to Paper Pieces. Long story short, I proposed other sizes, all based on the antique.  The difference between existing tumblers and my thimbles is that mine are short and squatty and fit on Moda Precuts.  Pretty cool, I think!
Class was for Two Thimbles in Bellingham, Washington. Lee, the owner, took my measurements and made a stamp, which she sells, if you like.  That is super fun to use if you like to hand piece.  ssh, I have one started.

Here is the antique doll quilt...
Enlarge the photo and you will see the acrylic template better.  They come in 1/4" and 3/8" seam allowances. Both templates work great for stacking and cutting scraps, then either machine or English Paper Piece.  This size has an 80 piece paper packet just for this project! Not precut specific, but fits jelly roll strips and 5" charms, with leftovers.
and here is my version, just need to sew the final rows together.
The antique quilt has a knife edge finish, and is tied, not quilted as there is no batting.

This photo shows the 4" version made with 6 charm packs of Harriet's Handwork. There are paper and acrylic templates available. This size would be fabulous in a scrappy assortment of charm packs of my lines or any assortment!
The 2 little quilts are made with 1" paper Thimbles and 3 Moda Mini Charm packs.  One with Harriet's Handwork and the other with Evelyn's Homestead. 1/4" and 3/8" seam allowance acrylic templates are available for machine or EPP.
United Notions/Moda is also distributing wholesale the 4" and 1" papers and 1/4" seam allowance templates.

And this is the 2" version, made from scrappy Thimbles of all my collections to date.

Betsy's Thimbles  made their debut at Spring Market in Portland and all sizes are available
 from me or  Paper Pieces
Just look for Betsy Chutchian Designs

Patterns for making Harriet's Thimbles (the 4" and 1" quilts) will be available when My Harriet's Handwork line ships in October.

That's all from me today. Be sure to check on our other designers to see what they have been doing.
Happy sewing!!!

Until next time ~
Betsy

It's MY day for Moda BlockHeads! Block 6 Path thru the Woods

It's been a busy week since Block 5 for Moda BlockHeads.  I'm at a retreat as you read this, 19th Century Patchwork Diva retreat to be exact. So, I'm writing this before I go....
fingers crossed blogger posts as I have scheduled!!!
Internet reception is sometimes hit or miss, at the wonderful retreat in East Texas, Greenbriar.  Great food, fellowship and sewing, compensate well for not being able to post to Instagram or Facebook as I would like, but I will definitely try!  With that said, I may not be able to respond to questions or comments you may make on the blog.  I'll have phone and iPad with me, so again fingers crossed that I can respond with the iPad.  If you are desperate with an issue, please contact me through either Facebook or Instagram, direct message, or by email (in profile). They might get through. Or, go to Carrie, link below. (thanks Carrie!)

Here is my version of Path Thru the Woods...

12" finished block

 CLICK  HERE for the pattern.

Please look at my sewing tips below.
You may wish to print and follow along.

Referring to the drawing, and cutting for A and B units,
For A, I cut 6 squares ivory solid (Moda Bella 9900-60) and 6 squares assorted green prints (Evelyn's Homestead) 2 3/8" . Cut each square again once diagonally.
Also for A, cut 8 squares of ivory and 8 squares of assorted green prints 2 1/2". From these 2 fabrics make half square triangle units. Trim each HST unit to 2".  I used a 2 1/2" Bloc_Loc ruler and it was perfect. You will have 16 HSTs.

Assembly
Step 1  Arrange individual triangles and HSTs as shown.

Step 2  Sew individual triangles to HSTs. Press to triangles, not HSTs.

Then sew units together in rows. Seams will nest.

I flipped (twisted) the intersecting seam and clipped seam allowance as needed to press as shown.
Intersections are very flat! Just the way I like them. :-)

Make 4 units.
I waited to clip away dog-ears until block was stitched together.

Step 3 Add B corners, note they are already oversized, so trim this unit to 6 1/2", using the opposite corners and the 45 degree diagonal line on your 6 1/2" ruler for reference.
Make 4 of these units.

Step 4  Sew units together. Can you see the seam flipped in this photo? It is pinned that way so the seams nest when sewn.

You will then need to clip the flipped seam after stitching to lay flat.

Here is the entire back, pressed and ready to have the dog-ears snipped.

and the block, one more time.

Hope you enjoyed making MY block!

Isn't it fun to see this coming together!!!

How are you coming along with your blocks?

Remember to visit all the designers to see what they are doing. Links are below. You will need to copy them to your browser window.

Next week is Stacy's week!

Watch for some photos from retreat, with internet cooperation, LOL.

Post photos and use #modablockheads to we can follow along and find them.

Happy Sewing!

Until next time,
~ Betsy

Moda BlockHeads 2 Block 5 Impact by Vanessa Goertzen

Happy Wednesday!  It's the 4th of July! So let's celebrate with Vanessa Goertzen's block Impact. And what do you do on the 4th of July....You go BIG...lots of food, parades, and fireworks.  And you go big with Vanessa too....a 24" block, and it is awesome! Find out more about Vanessa, and to see today's pattern, click here.

Thanks, Vanessa!

I made one tiny change to the original block, by making the 8" finished center, and uneven 9 patch, instead of a plain square.

Be sure to check out what the other designers are making and doing!

Visit Moda BlockHeads Facebook and use the hashtag #modablockheads and #showmethemoda
when posting your own photos to Facebook or Instagram.

Here are all my blocks, 1-5 altogether.  Had to stand on a chair to get a good photo.

I'm very happy how my blocks and fabrics are coming together.

It's been a super busy week, since block 4, flight to Springfield , Missouri to speak and teach.
Decorating and nursing a sick kitty.

Here is a little seasonal color for the 4th of July....

This is what the ladies of the Ozark Piecemakers Quilt Guilt made last week while I was in Springfield , Missouri.

Some of the lovely ladies in class...I had 19 that day.

We had lunch at the biggest Bass Pro Shop in the world...LOL. It seemed like it anyway, and home to a GIANT aquarium.  We could see only a little portion...put it on your list if you like aquariums.

And of course Miss Molly, recuperating on the couch. My sweet kitty had to have surgery right before I left for Springfield.  She hid for 3 days before I left. Fought taking her medicine and then I had to go ... She is very pleased to have me home now, and is doing quite well.  Thanks for all the Instagram and Facebook notes on my girl.

Next week, the block is one of MINE!  and I'm going to be out of town again...Diva retreat.
I'll schedule a post, so no worries there.  Fingers crossed my link will work, because internet reception is not very good there,  I'll be able to Instagram and Facebook, I think...but it is always hit or miss.

So until next week, have a fun and safe holiday.

~~  Betsy
