Before we get to Jan's block, or my mini block, let's talk color! Yes, that is the question of the week... Do I have a favorite color?
If you looked in my stash, opened all the doors of every cupboard, would you be able to tell which color is my favorite?
Can one's favorite color not be the one she, or he, has the most?
Interesting, or tricky???
...and what is your favorite?
Ok, this is only one cupboard. All colors in my palette are seen here, but this cupboard by no means holds all my fabrics. Lights, creams and shirtings are elsewhere. Blacks are in the cupboard, but cut off in this photo.
Knowing this isn't all of my fabric and none of my MODA fabrics are included here and my madders are in a different cupboard, what color do you think is my favorite?
A favorite per season? A favorite 'go to' fabric that I include in nearly every project? and even better, which color is my least favorite? It may or may not be in the photo.
Leave me a comment with your guesses, and if you are correct, I'll put your name in a drawing for a Rachel Remembered charm pack!
You have until 12 noon on Thursday Central daylight time to leave a comment. I'll announce the winner Thursday evening.
Basket and Flower, this week's block by Jan Patek, is as sweet as can be. I stitched this gem by hand using the needle turn method. Jan has a wonderful applique tutorial on You Tube! Nice break from the non stop machine sewing I've been doing for a secret project and for Quilt Market, which by the way is a week away! Ok, I'm easily sidetracked!
You will want to visit all the blogs (links below) and see what our BlockHeads designers have made, and I just bet, Lisa has an alternate, for those of you who don't applique.
For Jan's pattern CLICK HERE for her blog, instructions, pattern and tips.
All fabrics in my block are from Rachel Remembered, except the greens,
which are from Hope's Journey.
Better lighting . I have not trimmed to 6 1/2" yet.
Thank Jan, I loved stitching your block!
and now my Mini Penny 3" block for the week...
Mary Ann's Basket, which I designed for my book, Classic and Heirloom Quilts.
I've made these cute, cute baskets in fabrics from all my lines, except Eliza's Indigo, which was introduced just prior to writing this book.
They are fun, and fast. In the book we use the connector method, which I also used for this post. I did however 'up' the squares and rectangles to make the geese units, by 1/8", then trimmed finished units using a 3/4" x 1 1/2" Bloc_Loc flying geese ruler. Tiny geese can be a tad frustrating!
(You may make the geese units with any method you like.)
Super tiny, but awesome tool.
Finished geese are 3/4" x 1 1/2". Trim units to 1 1/4" x 2".
You will also need background pieces: a 1 1/4" square and 2 - 1 1/4" x 2" rectangles and,
1 - 2 3/8" square, cut diagonally.
From dark print, you will need a
2'' square and a 1 5/8" square cut in half diagonally.
Assemble as shown above, adding the light triangle last.
This sweet basket block pincushion was made by the hostesses of a retreat where I taught Mary Ann's Basket in March...they were part of the goody bag for each attendee. How special is that???
Mary Ann's Baskets in Classic and Heirloom Quilts
A Bramblewood version, not in the book. The blocks from Hope's Journey are buried,
somewhere in the sewing room.
For complete instructions and other block sizes, please see Classic and Heirloom Quilts, available at your local quilt shop, Fat Quarter Shop online, or from me.
So much to do and so little time!
Happy sewing!
Back to prepping for Market and the clock is ticking...
Until next time~

I think your favorite color is blue and your least favorite is black? I can't wait to see your answer!!
ReplyDeleteYour favorite is red and least favorite is pink.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Mary
Too bad I am "number one". No one picks number one in a drawing.... but brown is your fav, at least you tell us when in doubt pick brown.....
ReplyDeleteMy guess as to your favorite color is shades of red and your least favorite color as purple.
ReplyDeleteI love your quilts. The colors are always so pretty together.
I think this is a trick question because I'm not so sure you have a favorite color as much as you have a favorite combination. You have a fantastic color sense which is what draws me to your quilts and fabric collections. I might say green, or blue or dark reds or browns with cheddar and a combination of the above! Mine is chrome yellow but so other colors won't feel left out, I love them all! Love you little mini basket this week too. I'm itching to get to Busy Thimble as Rachael Remembered is in and I am getting the entire line. Yum!
ReplyDeleteI will have to base my guess on the closet and an inkling from your books. Blue and red are so close but I notice you seem to have larger pieces of the blue perhaps indicating you want to make sure you have plenty of blue whereas the reds appear smaller in size. So blue would be to your liking. Not to your liking is a khaki green color. In the lower left cupboard is what can I saw but a "pukey" green brown khaki color. You have purple and plenty of pink and yellow and green and brown. But that yucky green brown color on the bottom is smaller in amount and to my eyes not really a pleasant color. You will tell us though and then we will know! Best wishes on your sewing journey!
ReplyDeleteOk, here goes...chocolate is your favourite colour, orange is your least favourite. All of your quilts are so warm and rich looking!! Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteI think that BLUE is your favorite color because it is the messiest of the shelves...like you get into it more often and keep messing up your neat stacks.
ReplyDeleteIn my most humble opinion, I'll say that your favorite color is brown; least favorite, green.
ReplyDeleteI am guessing blue for favorite and orange for least favorite. LObe your quilts! Thanks for the chance to win.
ReplyDeleteMAry
I will guess that madder red is your favorite color. I must add that it is mine!! I will guess that pastels are your least favorite.
ReplyDeleteOf course, I'm basing all this on my preferences. Hope they're yours too!
It looks like your favorite is red and least favorite is purple.
ReplyDeleteI think blue is your favorite and purple would be your least, but I also think you use whatever works in a particular quilt, judging from my perusal of your books! Love the questions, since they gave me a reason to go through all of your patterns and drool!!
ReplyDeleteI think red is your favorite fabric color and purple is your least favorite.
ReplyDeleteAfter looking at your wonderful cupboard full of goodness I would say you like red/brown. I don't see much orange in your quilts so I would say that is your least favorite. I love your quilts and color choices and that is what really matters. Hope your Market journey goes well.
ReplyDeleteI love your blocks and will use your 3" block as inspiration for my pieced 6" block.
ReplyDeleteI think your fav is the madders, or maybe a version of orange as I know Halloween is a favorite of yours. Will fun to see.
ReplyDeleteBetsy, I will answer the questions in the order you asked. First, your favorite color is madder red. Per season, the answer is still red, with fall as your favorite season. Your go to color in every quilt is blue. Your least favorite color is purple (especially pastel lavender). Without fail your color combinations always please my eye! Kristy at soardkgatfusedotnet
ReplyDeleteLove the questions! I would say Blue is your favorite color, Red is your favorite seasonal color, Brown is your go to favorite for every project, and Orange is your least favorite. This is fun and thanks for the chance to win!
ReplyDeleteI think blue is your favorite and purple is your least favorite.
ReplyDeleteI think brown is your favorite and green is your least favorite.
ReplyDeleteHappy Quilting, Charlotte
I think your favorite color is red and least favorite is gray.
ReplyDeleteOh my....wonderful cupboard! I am amazed at your color sense. Wish I had some, but I have learned a lot about color choices from your patterns. I'd say your favorite is those little bits of red and orange is probably your least favorite.
ReplyDeleteBetsy, I think blue is your favorite and black is your least fave. I love most all of your color combinations in your fabric lines, and even though green is my favorite color, I also have lots of many other colors. Trying to keep up with the 3" blocks too! Thanks for the chance!
ReplyDeleteRed! Im sure of it, your favorite color to use is red, and your least favorite? Purple!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance to win a luscious charm pack!
I would say you do not have a favorite or least favorite. I think you work like "Mother Nature"...she does glorious things with many color combinations, shades and textures.
ReplyDeleteYour cupboard seems to have alot of blue & red, I'll go with the red! I didn't see any teal so I'll say that's your least favorite!
ReplyDeleteI think your favorite is blue with red runnning a close 2nd. My favorites too!
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing that your favorite color is red but you have lots of mine which is blue. I didn't spy much orange so that might be your least favorite. Cheryl B
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness I need to have that tiny blocloc ruler!!!
ReplyDeleteI think the colour you like least is black!
I think you are partial to blue---and red, my personal favorite
ReplyDeleteIs your favorite color red and least favorite purple?
ReplyDeleteWell that's a difficult question. You have to choose 1? (When asked, I tell people my favorite color is "autumn". I love all the colors of autumn, but they need each other to shine). My guess for your fsvorite color? Tans and browns. Least favorite? Black.
ReplyDeleteBlue is your favorite color. Least may be purple. Go to brown. Seasonal colors include green, yellow and red.
ReplyDeleteWell... I was going to guess blue as your favorite color, bu then you made your mini basket as red... So. I'll guess red as your favorite... and maybe yellow as your least favorite? Either which way, you certainly have a beautiful stash of variety...and whether pieced or appliqued, I always luvs me a basket block! :-)
ReplyDeleteThose Bloc_Loc rulers are so helpful! :-)
I would guess that your favorite color is mauve, maroon, muted pinks. Those jumped out to me immediately as that is my favorite color.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to guess your favorite is red (blue is also up there, they are so close!). My favorite has always been blue but I've grown partial to pink.
ReplyDeleteHi Betsy,
ReplyDeleteI think your favorite color is Brown
favorite seasonal color is Green
favorite go to color is Red
least favorite color is Yellow
May you have the happiest of days on Sunday, Happy Mother's Day!
I think your favorite color is brown and you least favorite color is black
ReplyDeleteI think your favorite color is brown. It is not my favorite color but I like fall colors a lot.
ReplyDeleteBetsey, I think you favorite color is Red - it's my favorite color also. However, my 7 year old granddaughter would pick turquoise, which you really don't show any there in the picture. I told her a few months back that she could pick any fabric from my stash she wanted to make her first quilt. Now she absolutely loves all my quilts, but when she looked at my fabrics (which look suspiciously like yours), she said Grandma, all your fabrics look kind of brown. After I picked my feeling up off the floor, we went to the quilt shop. We came home with many fat quarters of Kaffe Fasset fabrics and she made a very bright quilt, which she showed in our guild's quilt show in March. So the stash is one thing, but it is not as important as the fact that we get to pass this craft on and do this with the ones we love.
ReplyDeleteFavorite? Blue, I think. Least: Maybe yellow? There don't seem to be a lot of actual yellows. Thanks for your blog. I really enjoy it. (lynnstck[at]yahoo.com)
ReplyDeleteI think red is your favorite and green your least favorite. But you like to use other colors as well. Great blocks
ReplyDeleteHope I'm not too late!! Looks like red is your favorite since you have plenty of reds and pinks. Who can have plenty enough? LOL
ReplyDeleteBlue is my favorite but I'm always buying red first...hmmm. love your posts.
