Frivolous Friday

Back in August Moda started a year long Frivol program. Surely you have heard of them by now. There are 3 months left. Still plenty of time to collect!
I was honored to have my first line, Eliza's Indigo, selected for Frivol 3. A super cute tin, which holds fabric, two patterns, a pocket notebook and a quote.
Different Frivols have different goodies inside, a good reason to collect! I have now opened 2, One I keep pristine and the other I'll be packing with little sewing necessities,
This is the cute extra 'maker' block.
The pattern for it is on the other side of the card.  The card that says...

I love quotes. This one has spoken to me since May of 2000. Why then? My daughter Rachel, quoted these words in her salutatorian speech. Along with a few other quotes, she eloquently spoke that evening, held our attention and left all the moms in the stadium without a dry eye. Of course her focus was on leaving the familiarity of high school and going away to college, starting a journey toward adulthood and a career.
Just two years later, those words came back to mind as I was diagnosed with breast cancer. "The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." Since then I've applied it to everything and certainly my journeys...treatment, quilting, caring for my parents and more.
Whether a physical journey, or a spiritual journey, there is always a first step. Without that step, we stand still. When we stand still we don't grow, we don't experience, and we don't have fun. So we need more frivolity! More antique quilts to buy! More fabric, more brown transferware or blue or wooden boxes and carriers or TINS,,, Collecting make me happy.

Need to start a journey, or are you one one? So my advice: take a deep breath and take that step. There is always something  to be learned. And maybe have some fun along the way. Journeys take different paths and don't have a time limit either. Nor, a set course.

This was in the doctors office yesterday. Routine bloodwork. They have a nice inspiration board... full of quotes!

Be inspired. Be brave. Try something new. There is always a new quilt make!!! and fabric to collect!!!

My friend Annette posted this on Instagram, and I reposted. She made the little quilt pattern in my tin. So cute!

Most everything I do has a purpose.  A reason.

There is frivolity in playing with my granddaughter.

Madison and Minnie Mouse, and boxes from United Notions in the background. LOL. In our pajamas, most of the day. Totally Frivolous!

When was the last time you did something just for fun?  Tell me a frivolity of yours in a comment, or simply a comment on this post and I'll send a Frivol to a lucky winner, or two, or three. Chances to win end at midnight Monday April 11 Texas time.

Visit other Moda designers, Minick and Simpson, Brenda Riddle, American Jane, just to name a few,  as we celebrate Frivols. You will see postings on Instagram and Facebook too. Look for hastags. #modafrivolousfriday and #modafrivols

Until next time~

  1. When we traveled back to Oregon last fall, my DH indulged me by "making" me visit every quilt shop we came across as we traveled up the coast! Just for fun we started collecting Oregon coast-themed fabrics, with no particular plan in mind. His Oregon Memories quilt is in the hoop now - still having fun! There are scraps left over - more fun to come!

  5. Betsy, yesterday after seeing a beautiful photo on Facebook of bluebonnets and Indian paint brushes in full bloom, my Sweetie and I jumped up from the breakfast table on the spur of the moment and drove south down to Lamesa. The hill country of Texas is just beautiful. We visited some antique stores on the courthouse square and had a fun, relaxing time together.

  6. I love the whole idea of Frivols. As a quilter I feel that my quilting is frivolous at times even though there is usually a purpose to it. The last time I did something just for fun and for the joy of doing it was this week when I bought myself a bouquet of tulips - my favorite flower!

  7. On 2nd easterday we had a fierce storm in the Netherlands, otherwise the weather wasn't rainy. I still hadn't seen any lambs, so off we went for a walk to go see them. We had quite an adventure, trying not to be blown away by the wind, but we walked to a farm some miles away and we were rewarded with the sight of some lambs. They made our day ;-)
Happily, we walked home again and stayed indoors the rest of the day..LOL

  8. Well, a tin of Betsy Chutchian fabrics would indeed make my day! I have seen these, but have not seen yours yet. They are, as always, sensational. You are such an inspiration. I went to Old Sturbridge Village last weekend just to look at antique quilts. Some would consider frivolous, but I say essential!

  9. I love this line of fabrics! Frivolity? When my husband was on his last business trip, I stayed in my pajamas for a whole day playing with fabric in my sewing room. :)

  10. I just love to sit on the patio and listen to the rain. When it rains here in SoCal, it's an event! I don't want to waste a minute of it, so I'll bundle up and get as close as I can get to it without getting wet. Heaven!

  13. So the last thing I did for fun was last weekend. My husband and I packed up and went on a weekend getaway to a goat show in Tennessee. Our buck that we showed took Grand Champion! We made new friends and just had lots of fun! Frivolous was our weekend theme! Good for the soul every now and then!

  14. First let me say I love the new fabric, and little quilts. My frivolity these day is a rare day off from caring for my Dad with Alzheimers....and shopping antique shops and quilt shops. Also a Starbucks latte! Quilting has become my rock... my anchor to normality.

  28. One of our favorite frivolous things we did was go on what we called quarter trips. We would decide distances either by time or miles (or we would vary the distance by choosing ones out of a bag), when we got there at the next intersection we would flip a coin to decide if we would go right or left. We have found ourselves in some fun places.

  54. One of the things I love about Frivols (aside from the wonderful fabric) is that those little tins are a reminder that it only takes a little fun to brighten any day - dessert first at dinner, put on some music and dance, sing good and loud while doing the dishes, have an "I'm just reading today" day, call a friend you haven't seen in a while, or open a Frivol!
